Everyone needs a place to start, and Coso Mine Loop Trail is as good of a place as any. It isn't my favorite trail, mostly because it doesn't get far away enough to feel like I've left civilization, but I have to say, it's actually been just what I've needed to get back after it.

The trail located in Hungry Gulch Campground off of Hwy 155. Just off the campground entrance is a large dirt turn out with plenty of space for parking. To access the trail, head into the campground and you will find the trailhead off to the left. Signage makes it super easy to find.

The trail itself is 1.2 miles long and slowly winds up the side of a hill. and has some lovely views along the way. This trail is generally narrow, so there were a few points where my dog and I had to back track a bit to find a safe place for someone else with a dog to pass us, but on the weekdays we have mostly gone through the whole trail without running into anybody else.

The trail does connect with the Isabella Peak trail for peeps looking for more of a challenge. For the pup and I, the inclines provided enough of a challenge to feel like we did something.

The view of Lake Isabella are lovely. There is a bench at what I would guess is the halfway point with a great view. There is not a lot of shade, so if you are going during the summer it would be best to go early. We've had an especially mellow winter this year, but I think the spring or fall would be the best time to hike this trail.

It's not the most exciting trail, and to be honest some of the inclines where a bit humbling, but overall I feel like it's a great trail for beginners, or back at the beginners.

Below is a link to the Forest Service's page on the trail:
